Oyo Govt Commissions A World Class Neonatal Intensive Care Unit In Oyo

The Oyo State Government, on Monday, commissioned a world-class Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Oyo town.

The facility has 12 hospital beds for mothers and same for newborn babies, incubators, nursing station, store, changing room among others.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, while speaking at State Hospital, Oyo , explained that the facility was meant to put an end to Neonatal referral cases in the town and reduce death rates among the children born prematurely.

She harped on the need for medical personnel across health facilities in the state to work as a team and give their best at all times.

Dr. Oluwaserimi, noted that children deserve adequate care right from pregnancy till the point of delivery.

She hinted that the government through Hospital’s Management Board will deploy adequate staff to the facility to offer first class services.

She sought the cooperation of management and staffers of the hospital on proper management of the facility and delivery of standard services.

The Commissioner admonished members of the Oyo Metropolitan Development Association to ensure sustainability of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and see the facility as a personal project.

In her remarks, the National Project Coordinator, Antenatal Corticosteroid Implemental Research and Sick and Small Newborn Care Project, Associate Professor, Dr. Ayede Adejumo Idowu , described the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as the first of its class, which she said remains the first in Southwest States.

She expressed concern over available data on deaths of newborn babies in the country due to the absence of neonatal wards in some facilities, assuring that the facility will assist in reducing Neonatal death in the state.

She lauded the Oyo State government for speedy renovation of the block, which paved the way for actualization of the project.

Dr. Ayede assured training and retraining of doctors and nurses to be deployed to the facility and constant monitoring to ensure the delivery of standard services.

She appealed to members of the community to take the ownership of the project and give necessary support for the benefit of all and sundry.

The Chairman, Oyo Metropolitan Development Association, Retired Arch Bishop, Prince Ayo Ladigbolu, expressed great delight over the decision of the project implementing partners for positioning the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Oyo town, saying the entire Southwest region will benefit from services to be provided at the facility.

Prince Ladigbolu, who described the facility as a global standard, said the community will pay attention to activities of the facility and ensure staffers are protected to perform maximally.

The event had in attendance, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Akintunde Ayinde and his Hospitals Management Board Counterpart, Dr. Anifah Ibraheem and Directors from the Ministry of Health and Hospitals Management Board.
Also, Prof. Olayemi Oladapo and Dr. Ray Ezekiel from Antenatal Corticosteroid Implemental Research and Sick and Small Newborn Care Project.
